Hello! My name is Raine (pronounced ‘rainy’) Saunders. I write and manage content for Agriculture Society. 

After years of health issues that I couldn’t solve and doctors who wouldn’t help me, I began to research ways to heal my body and take control of my own health.

I started this web site in 2006 as a way to support the idea that we can live in a sustainable, truly organic, and environmentally-safe “society” where our living habits work in accordance with nature through the promotion of ecologically sound choices and actions.

I discovered that the food we consume, the items we use in everyday life, and our habits have a profound effect on our health. We really can create and maintain a healthier world without chemicals and toxins.

I taught nutritional education at the Treasure Valley Downtown YMCA, organized an initiative for reform in school lunch menus in the Treasure Valley, have presented about real, traditional foods at various nutrition and health events, and have also served as a volunteer to educate the public at various public events about traditional foods using Weston A. Price educational materials and models.

I am a wife to Bruce and mother to our son Tristan. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to have been able to home-school him for 5 years, and now Tristan is attending a local public charter school. Because his school does not have a district instituted lunch program, I am able to control what he’s eating to the fullest extent possible and send a home-made lunch with him every day.

Everything I do on this site is as a result of wanting to maintain the health of myself and my family. I want my son to have the best foundation for health possible – especially since my husband and I never had that when we were growing up.

My concern for my own family extends to that of others, and I finally feel like I am doing what I was supposed to in this life – helping others to learn about the wonderful ways of eating for better health, and sustainable living in various aspects whether it be through the use of alternative energy, consuming less, supporting merchants or food producers who use ethical and conscionable methods in their products, or growing our own food.

I believe fats, protein, and cholesterol from clean animal sources are not only delicious but essential to good health – especially for that of development in children and infants. Our brains are almost completely comprised of fat, so its no wonder we require it for good health. This is particularly true in the case of young children. Just think of all the problems children face in modern life – a rise in Diabetes, ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, and many others. So many of these can be solved with proper nutrition. And aren’t our kids worth it?

Although I do a great deal of research, many of the principles on this web site are from the research of Dr. Weston A. Price, a dentist who traveled the world to over 14 isolated villages and discovered that these cultured relied heavily upon traditional foods to preserve health. The Weston A. Price Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about what Dr. Price learned with regard to the importance of traditional diets and nutrient dense foods produced from sustainable farming around the world, and how they profoundly affect human health. Above all, their efforts are dedicated to sustainability, activism, and education. Because those things are important to me too, this organization receives my full endorsement and support.

The information found here is based on research with individuals, scientific literature, and experiences that are both personal and observational. Enjoyed reading your article today on healthy animal fats. So, so true. I wish I could get this information through to my partner who is a devout vegetarian. Honestly, I worry about his eating habits. We are the exact opposite. Me: animal protein preferably purchased direct from the farmer who raised the animals, veggies, nuts and a little fruit. Him: abundance of carbs and sugar, no flesh, some eggs, grains. I’m going to cut and paste parts of your post and email it to him. Thanks for the info!

Hi Debra – it’s very hard with vegans and vegetarians, but I know various people who were on plant-based diets and finally decided they were tired of fighting health issues and got back onto eating meat. All of these folks have had very changed lives by eating sustainable meats and fats. So keep working on your partner, be patient, and think of it in baby steps. Start up with butter and dairy products first if he’s not eating those, and then work your way slowly into other foods like fish or poultry (some vegetarians eat fish, but I don’t know how your partner’s habits are) and go from there. And especially work on reducing grains because I think part of people’s insistence on eating a plant-based diet comes from eating too many grains and those foods, especially if not properly prepared, can destroy your gut flora and digestive health balance enough that it can cause other issues that many people don’t associate with eating carbs and grains. The very foods that cause health issues also cause terrible cravings – as discussed in Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride’s book Gut and Psychology Syndrome. I found your website and was intrigued by what I read. I believe in the philosophies of Weston Price Foundation and eating traditional foods. With all of the hype about a vegetarian diet being the best, I have tried learning to cook with less meat and more vegies for my families health. But found our energy lagged, we don’t feel “up to par” and our bodies crave sustenance that only meat can provide. I cook up some steak, grill some chicken or roast some pork and we can feel the difference eating meat can create. We consume as many vegetables as we can each meal and have found that juicing fresh vegies and some fruit has made a major change in our health.
